The Belt and Road International DayDecember 16is an international folk festival established by the World Peace Ribbon Organization (WPRO). Which is initiated by scholars such as Chen Entian and Ji Chaozhu in response to and in honor of the Belt and Road Initiative for International Cooperation.

Origin of the festival

On December 16th, 2013, Venerable Master Hsingyun, the founder of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist monastic order in Taiwan, went to Qinglai Hall of Yunnan University to hold a Buddhist lecture entitled "Seeing the Power of Dreams". In Chinese, "December 16th(一二一六)" and the "Belt and Road(一带一路)" are similar in pronunciation and in the arrangement of characters, which makes it easy to memorize. Chen Entian, former chairman of the International Seven-Three Society, and other scholars decided to designate December 16th as the Belt and Road International Day. After that, Chen Entian and Ji Chaozhu, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, with the support of the then Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, and the then Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova, founded the World Peace Ribbon Organization(WPRO), and established the Belt and Road International Day in the name of the World Peace Ribbon Organization(WPRO).
